Below is my post from last year’s 2013 Skating on the River event:

Ice Skating is not something we get to do very often in South Louisiana. However, I used to live up North and have been skating quite a few times. So when I had the opportunity to go ice skating in Baton Rouge with my friend, her son and her nephew, I jumped at the chance. But I quickly realized it had been a LONG time since I had skated! It is tough! I did improve after a few laps around the ring though. And no falls! The kids were much better at balancing than the adults.

The whole event (called “Skating on the River”) was organized, affordable and FUN! Parking is easy at the Baton Rouge River Center. Since we attended after working hours, we parked on the street for free. Parking was available readily available in the large parking garage next to the BRRC.

Each person costs $12 and your ticket includes 75 minutes of skating time, your skate rental, and a drink from the concession stand. Other concessions were available, such as nachos, cotton candy, etc. Only cash is accepted at the concession stand, but ATMs are located in the facility.

Here is the ice before we made our mark on it!

Everyone seemed to stick close to the sides for the first half an hour or so, then we all felt a little move brave.

There were several people there who knew what they were doing! We enjoyed watching them do fun tricks. DSC_2907

The kids stayed on the ice the entire 75 minutes. They had a blast. Our session was not crowded – I am not sure if the session sold out.

We had a great time and will go back next year! If you are looking for a fun and unique event for your family to attend while out of school for the holiday break, this is highly recommended! Note: Preschool and younger kids may have some trouble maneuvering and the blades on the ice skates can be a little dangerous for the younger ones. Recommended for ages 7 and up.
